Ham Radio Emergency Services / Contest / Public info

On Saturday June 23 and extending through Sunday morning is an event for you if you are curious about ham radio as a hobby or if you are curious about our emergency communications as a public service.

All about Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) and its support during a communications emergency.

You are invited on Saturday, June 23 from 1pm "until ..." to witness a nationwide communications exercise/contest that is part of the ongoing drilling that radio amateurs perform in order to be prepared to support you in the event of a communications emergency where commercial and even law enforcement/public service communications are either interrupted or overloaded.

WHERE: The park behind Galloway-Hammond in Burnet (just look for the antennas)
WHEN: From 1pm on Saturday, June 23 and continuing for 24 hours.

"What will I see and why do I care?" Good question. While this activity is cast in the form of a contest where the object is to make as many contacts in 24 hours as possible, it is also an exercise in establishing a communications facility in "the wild" running on generator (and in some cases battery or solar) power with field-erected antenna farms. You will see operators communication by voice, morse code and various digital modes similar to internet email and instant messaging. Communications will be nation and world wide without the use of any commercial means.

We can do the same for you during a disaster -- we will be ready, come see how. We hope you will come by for a visit. We will be set up in a couple of RV's so the air-conditioning will be on!
