A while back on the old site, there was mention of some sort of orientation to HAM. I'm interested in learning about the sport. I know that there are a few operators. Any help?

I remember that old thread. I dont recall all the details but it was started by Chuck Dear/VFD I believe. I think he still uses this site now and then. Maybe he will chime and give some updates.
I have books on the subject and various radios but have not done it in a long time. But I should dust them off and reaquaint myself with the use and operation.

There is a local club, the Highland Lakes Amateur Radio Club, which has a meeting the last Friday of the month at 7:30pm at the Marble Fall EMS training room. Visitors are always welcome.
The club periodically puts on a training and exam session to license new hams. I did that in June and got re-licensed after 25+ years of being away from the hobby. There may be another class put together if enough area interest is shown. It's a weekend deal culminating in volunteer examiners being available on Sunday afternoon to administer the FCC exams and you find out immediately if you passed!
I'd be happy to visit with you or anyone who is interested. You know how to find me. ;-)

Thanks for the info. I was all over the CB thing back in the day, and had my legal numbers, but it's been a while, and HAM is a cut above the old CB's.
Do I have to commit a crime to come see you? I'm not sure I want to go that route. J/K

The Highland Lakes Amateur Radio Club is a great group. They train with the emergency services in Burnet and Llano Counties to ensure emergency backup communications in the event of a disaster. They have also worked to assist emergency responders in the region to obtain their HAM radio licenses, participate in disaster drills and all aspects of disaster planning. After the tornado in Jarrel, Texas, Williamson County lost a significant portion of its emergency communications and relied on HAM radio to carry out its operations. We are very fortunate to have these dedicated individuals in our area.
Thanks HLARC for all that you do for your community,

Johnny,
Glad to have you as part of the Ham community and we are thankful for all that you do for us!
One of the benefits of being involved in the training along side of the First Responders in Simulated Emergency Tests, has been getting to meet some nicest folks around. As well as getting a small insight into the jobs you folks during day to day as well as area wide emergencies. Thanks!

We did a code class just before they dropped the requirement. Had several students (including myself).
Maybe someday the pros will try and teach it again.
In the meantime there are Lots of practice places on the internet here is one.

The class is over and it was a huge success. 100% pass rate for the class participants + one Technician upgraded to General and a General class upgraded to Extra class.
Kudos to Sanford Musgrove (W5FIT) for organizing it. The topics and instructors were:
Introductions, discuss class process - Sanford Musgrove (W5FIT)
Chapter 1, Welcome to amateur radio - Rik Chapman (K5RIK)
Chapter 5, Licensing requirements - Jim Dear (W5LOG)
Chapter 2, Radio and Electronic Fundamentals - Riley Carruthers (W5RLY)
Chapter 3, Operating Station Equipment - Gil Jones (KA5GIL)
Chapter 4, Communicating with other Hams - Robyn Richter (KE5LAT)
Chapter 6: Operating Regulations - Jim Dear (W5LOG)
Chapter 7: Radio Safety - Rik Chapman (K5RIK)
Ten new Technician class licensees will now be able to enjoy this great hobby that also provides a significant public service in support of community events that require communications and in times of emergencies when commercial communications fail or are inadequate to handle the communications needs. "When all else fails ... Ham Radio works"
And there's more ... On April 18 the club is hosting a "Get On The Air" (GOTA) day for these new hams and for any other ham who may be licensed but not actively on the air. Any ham needing help or encouragement to get active is welcome.
What: GOTA Day
