Burnet deputy dies in morning wreck (http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/blotter/entries/2009/10/03/burnet_deputy_dies_in_crash_wi.html)

A Burnet County sheriff’s deputy was killed early this morning when his car veered off the road, possibly because he struck a deer.
At about 1 a.m., Frances David Blake was responding to a major wreck on Park Road 4, about 2 miles south of Highway 29, when he over-corrected and skidded off the road, Department of Public Safety officials said. Blake’s vehicle struck a tree, went airborne, then struck another tree, DPS said. Officials are investigating the possibility that he veered off the road because he struck a deer.
Blake, 42, was pronounced dead at the scene. “Sheriff (W.T.) Smith and co-workers … are deeply saddened by the loss of this fine officer,” said a statement from the sheriff’s office.
Blake had worked a the sheriff’s office since October 2004, starting out as a jailer then transferring to patrol work as a field deputy earlier this year. He is survived by his wife and four children.

My thoughts are with the family of Deputy Blake and the BCSO during this time.

Folks Please, Please, Please Wear your seatbelts. This man was very well liked, loved by the folks that he served. He had just worked at our Bull Ride for the MFAVFD on the 26th of September. He will be missed greatly.

I got caught in the traffic stop for the procession yesterday in Burnet. I have to say it was one of the most moving experiences I have witnessed.

I was a part of the procession yesterday and it was a sight to behold. The ceremony at the cemetery was also very moving. There were bagpipes, a 21 gun salute, and a flyover by helicopters. At the end, one of the dispatchers called Deputy Blake's badge number over the radio twice with no answer. Then the Sheriff came over the radio and announced that Deputy Blake's badge number was officially retired. Deeply touching.

It never ceases to amaze me how the public safety community comes together when someone is in need. I was ok until the bagpipes and the last call, I can still hear both in my head.

It was truly a sight to see, and a sight I hope to never see again.

What type of call was the deputy responding to at the time of the accident, and what was the disposition of the issues that triggered the deputy's response? Did another officer respond or was the situation remedied by the personnel involved?

I only knew Deputy Blake in a professional sense when our son was in the county jail. It was very obvious he had a very big heart under that badge he wore so proudly! If it were not for him and some of the other jailers I honestly do not know where our son would be today...he made a very big impression on him.
I had just lost my mother and was still reeling from that experience when this all went down with our son. He was the youngest inmate in there at that time and while I certainly never condoned his choices Deputy Blake understood and took time to be reassuring to me as a parent. I will always have a special place in my heart for him and the others...they went above and beyond the call of duty and literally saved my son's life!
My love, prayers and thoughts are with everyone that has been touched by this tragic, tragic situation.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to each of you that put yourself in harms way everyday to keep my family safe!
Love and Peace,
