Is there any one in the Highland lakes that can help me? I moved about 6 blocks to a new home about 3 & 1/2 years ago and the the property (in Granite Shoals) must have been a Yucca plantation many years ago, or else the builder spread pieces of yucca roots all over the place when he was grading the property. One friend suggested that I just keep going over them with with my lawn mower and they would gradually give up the ghost, but it appears that just causes them to multiply. I've been on every gardening forum that I could find on the inter net. Below is the only thing that I haven't tried yet. This was for yucca planted next to a wall.
If it's wrapped itself into the wall, stern measures will be needed. To ensure yucca elimination: 1) Take down the wall and dispose of it well away from your property.
2) Dig deeply and remove all visible bits of the plant.
Dispose of the soil, well away from your property.
3) Dig even more deeply (preferably down to molten magma). Once you have excavated a crater roughly 10 times the diamter of the original plant and at least 3 feet deeper than all visible roots, remove all dirt, rock etc. and dispose of well away from your property.
4) Fill the pit with double-strength Brush-B-Gone and erect a security fence around it. Inspect around the edges once daily for marauding roots. Be prepared to call in air support if needed.
5) Approximately 50% of gardeners have found that by strictly adhering to these methods, the yucca will be vanquished within 5 years.
6) If you are within the unlucky 50%, move to a new home. Do not take any plants or garden equipment with you. Do not leave a forwarding address.
Can anybody suggest something less drastic. Thanks, in advance.

While I sincerely sympathize with your situation, the steps above certainly gave me a big laugh for the day. It was obviously written by someone who had huge problems with yucca. For the most part, the writer is pretty much on target. Yucca is not easy to get rid of. And you're right, mowing it down doesn't help at all. The problem is that yucca sends out shoots (underground) no matter what you do. I did manage to get rid of a really big plant in my garden by digging down and getting out as much of the root as possible. Of course, it just sent off shoots in every direction. The only thing I could do was dig those up as I found them. I'm not sure what else to tell you, except good luck. This is one tenacious plant!

ICARE--thanks for the bit of humor with your yucca problem. Especially the molten magma part!
Though I think yucca grows on magma soon after it cools again--you see the plants growing out of solidified lava in Idaho and Hawaii!
If only you could find a comercial use for some derivitive of the plant...
Good Luck!

ICARE & WHOISJOHNGALT: The fibrous leaves can be woven into mats, sandals, and baskets, even if you are not a native American. The leaves can also be frayed on the end and used for paint brushes. The roots can be pounded in water to produce a lather used for soap and shampoo (hence the name soap weed. Since we are entering a severe drought, itI can be used for cattle feed and the fruits of the fleshy fruited species (banana yucca) has been and can be used for food. The root is a therapeutic anti inflammatory phytosterol with the ability to break up inorganic mineral obstructions and deposits, i.e. internal. Its primary uses are in pain-relieving combinations for arthritic and joint pain, and sediment caused by inflammation such as gout, rheumatism, and cystitis. It is also used to establish a flora balance in the GI tract and for asthmatic relief. The root may have a laxative effect.
As a soap or shampoo, you can pound the roots in water to produce a lather used for soap and shampoo. "First pull up the root which is deep into the ground and wash all of the dirt off, peel away the dark layers until you reach the white root (inner root), then take a hammer or cut the root and when agitated it should produce a later that is great for washing". SINCE YOU HATE/WANT TO ELIMNATE THIS PLANT, POUND AWAY. YOU'LL FEEL BETTER.
IN another recipe yucca soap can be made from shredding the leaves and rubbing them together between your palms with water. or you can take the root peel it place root in a piece of cloth and pound it with a hammer or something, and then add water and you will have soap. You also can shred it and added it to trace in making lye soap. After it dries and the hardening process is completed you can use the bars to wash with. The lather isn't much unless you add glycerin to your recipe. The fruits of some species can be eaten, either raw or roasted. In some species the fruits can reach a size of 20 cm in length (The Mexican species yuccagrandiflora), so it's quite a meal. And the flowers can be used as food in salads. but I've no testament to taste.
So, if you can't "lick it," then utilize it!

I do have first hand experience with the flowers of the yucca plant. They need to be rinsed well. Then you must clip off the ends to remove the bitter part. If all goes well, which is rare, you'll have something that tastes like cabbage.

PrestonKirk--Much Obliged!! Great information.
I've wanted to get back into farming--with such a tenacious plant, so many uses, and my parched lawn, I am inspired!! :-)
btw... can one ferment with yucca? If you can make gin with juniper, what can we do with yucca?
I'd be tempted to apply for an EDC grant if we can come up with a formula... but that may open a whole 'nuther subject... ;-)

Hey folks, I'm working on a new solution to WHAT TO DO WITH YUCCA. I dug one up and planted it in a pot, over fertilized it and will be watering it at least twice a day (you never see yucca in humid or marshy areas). I think we might have a solution. The over watering and fertilizer might just kill it and if it doesn't we will probably have a giant yucca and we can go into the sandals, baskets, soap, and paint brush business ;-}.
Thanks for all the reply's and I'll keep Googleing the darn thing and keep you posted.
