Tried this for the first time last Saturday with some friends. Overall it was a good experience. The chicken was smokey, tender and very good. The brisket seemed to also be a real winner. The sides (you pick 2 buffet style and if you take more you will be charged!) were standard potato salad, beans, coleslaw. The place was clean and friendly. Great service. Good tea. The only downside was the sauce. I know, what's BBQ without great sauce? But the meat was actually quite good without it. The sauce seemed very thin, sweet and more on the lines of Arby's sauce than a true home style BBQ place.

I've eaten at Spykes for years and love their brisket and sausage. (I'm not into chicken) I, for one, don't use BBQ sauce because all it does is mask the flavor of the meat. In my opinion, BBQ done right doesn't need sauce. The rub that Spykes uses is what makes their meat so good. They are one of the best BBQ places around next to Inmans in MF, as far as I'm concerned.

Matokeya, You are so right. Real Texas BBQ is all about the Rub never about the sauce. The thin watery stuff is a baste to use while cooking the meat to keep it from drying out. Even a baste is not necessary if you know how to BBQ.
BBQ Sauce is for novice cookers and eaters ! yuk:rolleyes:

Well, my companions and most people I know still seem to feel the sauce is very important, despite the facts - but I will be going back to Spykes myself for the very tasty chicken and beef. I noticed several reviews on places like Yelp complaining about their sauce as well.

Tuesday to Saturday 11-3 Tuesday thru Thursday Friday 11 to 8 Saturday 11 to 6.

Ribs are great, Chicken is very good also.

If you want something different try the "Williams Special" that is Frito chips, chopped BBQ cheese and beans (if you want them). Makes for a very interesting meal.

As for the sauce, it is good depending on your personal preference. It certainly beat sauce at some joints (not to be named) that serve vinegar concoctions and make you go to the grill :>)

Oh, and the whole crew there is very nice.

Located on RR 1431 and FM 2342 (just west of the Llanorado bridge at the turn to Longhorn Caverns)

No I do not work there ...

Had occassion to visit a very famous BBQ place in Cincinatti. Very proud of it, they are. Autographed photos of athletes, Presidents, celeberties everywhere. Went in with high expectations and thoroughly lubricated salivary glands. Ordered their famous ribs. What I actually got--dry meat and tangy sauce... :(

I'll readily admit to being spoiled--there's just nothing like good ol' central Texas BBQ. And, Ya!, it's all in the meat!! Might dunk a hunk in sauce once in a while just for variety.

My only problem is figuring out which place has the best BBQ. My in-depth, detailed, rigorous, meticulous, systematic, painstaking, laborious, exacting, assiduous, savory, piquant and delectable research is continuing. But hafta admit, has not yet included Spykes--will add them to the expanding list (and expanding waist line).

Thanks!

And Merry Christmas to all!
