I remember when we use to have a good time here. We talked about food a lot. We put our opinions out there but we wernt mean and ugly. None of this cut n paste stuff either.
sombody said opinions were like you know xxxxxxxx-everybodys got one. but you know what mine is mine and yours is yours and Im not gonna try to mess with yours and I will thank you to leave mine alone.
Now I know my typing is bad. Its worse than 2 fingers it 1 1/2. I do the best I can.
Do you remember live and let live. Can we just keep it a little friendly and not so mean.

Kudos! As I quoted Grandpa, opinions are like armpits.... Yes, I miss our little town as it was as well. Unfortunately we have been invaded by rude citiots (just a cute word I picked up, don't get upset) who have forgotten their manners. The worst part is we said Y'all come in our best southern manners!

I'd like to challenge that statement. I've only been here 10 years and thus, a newcomer. I watched get polluted by San Antonio refugees back in the early 90's, and hoped that I would not do that when I moved here. My views are conservative, much like this community, but damm, have I got an opinion.

So let me have it locals. Have I been part of the problem, or not?

Chip, I don't know, don't think so, but you decide....
Do you stop or slow when children on bikes or horses are on the road?
Do you drive with your phone on your ear and cause problems?
Do you cut off other folks in the parking lot?
Do you look afraid when folks wave a friendly Hello?
Do you make rude remarks to others in the checkout line?
Does your children's teacher not know what you look or sound like?
Do you run the stop sign at the Home Depot parking lot, thinking it is a street?
Do you remember Michels, and the friendly atmosphere there?
Do you pitch a quiet fit when others cheer at a movie, than make rude remarks?
Do you avoid folks in trouble, or lend a helping hand?
Are you glad we lost our theater (where locals chased down a man trying to nab a young boy, where the owner and friends would call your parents if you were really naughty)?
Do you even notice the sirens that go off numerous times each day and whisper a prayer for those who need that help?
Just some questions KingChip, to help you decide. Maybe others could see themselves here.
Fact is, we have become a bedroom town, and a lot of those folks feel themselves entitled. Not their fault, it is how and where they grew up. Wish they could have learned our ways. Not all "old folks" were great either, but we had a nice little town and no traffic problems except when the cows got loose on a county road. Excuse my waxing nostalgic, I REALLY MISS IT!

Chip, I actually think PT was talking about Oldtimers on this Forum but in any event I have always known you to be fair and fun, not mean and ugly. I do believe you definitely qualify as an oldtimer on the Forum.

Gardener, does wanting to go downtown to Michel's and have a pimento cheese san and a fountain coke count toward old timer? LOL:popcorn:

I do agree with Pure Texan that the forum has changed. Times have caused us to be angry and I am just as guilty as most in letting that political anger get out of hand sometime.

I too do not care for all the lengthy cut n paste stuff that I may or may not have already read. I want to hear local, original thoughts and opinions.
Like Chip said, I too am conservative, an independent conservative.
I am a 7th generation Texan and concerned about both my State and my Country. Probably in that order.

As Joan Rivers says, let's talk. Civilly.:gr_jest:

I must say one thing - this forum is fabulous for pure entertainment! Some of the people out here have some really far out conspiracy theories, so it's never lacking for funny. I shake my head on more than one occasion!

Tonigking- Oh you are definitely showing signs of old timerism when craving Michels pimiento cheese.
Do you remember the smell of the store when a new shipment of boots arrived at Seidenstickers?

I personally am a texicratican partier. I cannot agree with ALL of what any of "those politicians" or the folks here at home on the forum say. But we all have the right to say it, NICELY! It is Free Speech not Free Rudeness.

I remember the wonderful fountain drinks at Michels but had forgotten all about Seidenstickers!

I remember when Burnet and Marble Falls had one red light, and they started blinking at 10:00PM. Now, I go through 14 lights just to get to work. Burnet PD uniforms were green. There was a Gibson's Store in Burnet. The German American Restaurant at Buchanan Dam. Lake Buchanan was full at 1020', not 1018'. LCRA didn't own EVERYTHING! Where Marble Falls' HEB is, used to be a mall. There was no Wal-Mart. Hwy 1431 east was a 2 lane road with cows on it. Marble Falls PD was in the City Hall building. There were plenty of public parks available on Lake Buchanan. There was a restaurant on Buchanan Dam. Oh, for the good old days.

Yep and there were no cell phones. Mom had a CB Radio installed in my car so I could let her know when I was leaving the school after getting in from out of town Football games just in case...
Winns use to be in the lot where the Horester Clinic is now with HEB right next door. That's where the Football Community Pep Rallies were held every Thursday night! There wasn't a Sonic (Storms now). Only burger place in town was Atwoods that I can recall. Kens BBQ use to be out here in GS on the corner of Phillips RR and Inmans was the only in town BBQ place. We use to have a Gibsons where the Bealles store is now with Lakeland Mall where HEB is now. That place had EVERYTHING and we thought it was up town, hahaha. Cockrans Drive in use to be the school lunch time hang out as we had open campus back then...
When a class of 80 kids graduated from High School that was considered to be a BIG class and we had 3 schools total in our district! Everyone knew everyones names too...

Yes, that is what we are missing...The sense of community that drew all these new folks here has eluded them.
Could it be because we did not include them? Or because they wanted the nice little town but not the country folks.
Maybe all the new commercial convenience that came along with them has fostered this continuation of the big city defensive\not nice attitude.
Can we save our community from big city-itis or is it too late? Suggestions? Or just Reminiscence and Eulogy?

Being how we Old Timers are far out numbered by the city folks I feel it's safe to say the days of thinking of saving our community are long gone. They don't care about the traditions or customs that this area were built on and made it what it is today. Who cares about History these days? That's too dark age for a lot of folks...

Business owners use to take the time to speak with their customers and appreciated their business.
Schools use to welcome and reach out to ALL the people in the community by having the public pep rallies and business owners use to happily volunteer their parking lots to hold them.
There were Sock Hops, Street Dances, Country Fairs and Rodeos that always had full houses...

Now? Nobody even takes the time to stop and talk or greet each other like we use to. Too big of a hurry to get where they are going and especially when they are behind the wheel of a vehicle!
So no this Old Timer sees no way of ever getting back those good old days. We are out numbered by big city people that don't care and have the ideal that bigger is ALWAYS better!

I don't know about you guys but I avoid MF like the plague on weekends. Would never consider going out on the lake. Memorial Day to Labor Day is miserable.(For the residents; It's great for the merchants , I hope)
Phillips RR in GS becomes a speedway. It seems they all drive as they do on the freeways whether they are on land or water.
The "foreigners" blow in with total abandonment, recklessness and complete disrespect for local residents.:(
Now I know some of you will pounce on my head, but you better believe I am not alone in my opinion...

Of course you know that I agree, in more southern lady terms, Thank you very much! BUT, can we turn this around, at least in part? What can we old timers do to remind these whippersnappers that we built a town with an EMS made of Chili! Our mayor was married to a clown and our Chief of Police had his own vineyard next to the school (you can still see it) and was making wine when it wasn't exactly popular to do so.....
Can we school them in the fact that 4H and FFA kids will be feeding them!
That the fair and rodeo are, in fact, a scenario of the history of their food chain.
And that (to paraphrase Churchill) " Nothing is quite so good for the insides of a man as the outside of a horse.) All a part of Marble Falls and Burnet County. Surely most of these new folks would welcome a reminder of WHY they came here....A Yesteryear Festival???

I like the idea of the Yesteryear Festival! I would suggest a Fall event however.

Hey Gardener, sorry I don't live up to your expectation of a "southern lady, thank you very much" .:p
I don't come from the South, I come from West Texas ranch country where women are real and don't get all fluttery and dewy, we work, hunt, sweat and raise our families right along with the men. Thank you very much! :D

Just as an aside, my Mother came to MF with my Stepdad, who worked for Gen. Tel. , to convert crank n hollar telephones to dial system. Remember that?;)

Sorry, I did not mean to offend you. I was not attacking you. Don't think making these new folks angry will solve the problem. They just need to learn neighborliness
that we all grew up with.
Just trying to be mannerly about the bad situation we are all in here.

But I took down the biggest buck in our family history, my men are still mad..
I still go out and sweat every day on this place and have raised my family even when their Dad had to be absent a great deal of the time doing his job, while holding down a full time job and running this place to boot. My grandmother ran the crank and hollar phone system for a huge land area. Not a fluttery dewy female in the bunch, just trained to be polite, no matter how many calluses on our hands... So we talk differently, but say the same thing.
Friends?

To all you oldtimers: We have only been in MF for 4 years so we are the newbies of which you speak. We love it here for all the reasons you are discussing. We have a wonderfully close neighborhood, enjoy all the small town friendliness, and are fortunate enough to be retired so that we can shop and run errands during the week. I know there are folks that are guilty of your complaints but there are a lot of us newcomers that embrace the same things you do. That's why we are here. I love to read all your reminisences.

Gardener, didn't take offense at all . Couldn't you tell by the avatars ?

I won't try to play one upmanship with you either. My story would break your heart!

JWebb, thanks for being a good neighbor and welcome!.

I welcome anyone who wishes to be "a good neighbor", but I am mad as heck at the ones
who come in and act like heathens and I am very likely to stay that way.
You can better believe I will always call it like I see it.

You sweet talk'em Gardener and I'll tell'em how the cow ate the cabbage .
When adults have to be told how to act and show respect, count on me to tell'em so in no uncertain terms!:gr_devil:
