View Full Version : What are your pet peeves?

I realized tonight that one of my pet peeves is people using doorknobs as if they were meant for hanging things...grrr. My wife and kids seem to think that's what they were made for.

Oh, and someone leaving their junk on my computer desk.

Three things that drive me nuts:

Stores that put stickers on glass or photo frames that are impossible to peel off.

Hard plastic packaging that practically takes a chain-saw to open. I bought a flat-iron today and had to fight getting it out of the hard plastic.

Being short and having to climb up on a shelf in the grocery store to reach something.

(Reapp, I'm guilty of hanging things on door knobs)!

Ok, when did you come by the house? The better half doesn't seem comfortable if there isn't something hanging on the doors.

Love the rain, but my beloved indoor/outdoor wet,mud wallering dog is seriously cramping my style!

Thank God for sirens on ambulances, police cars, etc!!!! There are times I'm beebopping along as though I own the road! I blame it on coming from the middle of nowhere to a place that actually needs a population sign but I'm learning!!!

When you try to get help money wise, (house payment, utilities, car payment, etc.) for awhile since you lost your job and they tell you that your credit is bad, so they can't help you. Duh? I lost my job, remember me telling you? My mortgage co. and everybody tells me that I have no money, so therefore they can't help me. Duh? That's why I need help. Is this a backwards world or what?

Another pet peeve: Whenever you get call mtg. co., credit card co, etc. and you get someone from India or wherever that can barely speak english. Once again, what has happened to America? Hit one for english my foot. Everybody in the United States should speak english.

Lately,my pet peeve is receiving an email from a friend or family member and it's just "Fwd:junk mail."
When I see their name I look forward to news from them, then I realize they just clicked some button and forwarded junk mail my way.

I couldn't agree more about the fwd:"junk mail" !
It really ticks me off when I open it just in case there is a personal message and there are 500 names from previous fwds. when it is so easy to clean them up before forwarding.
I have notified all my friends, family, enemies and unknowns that I will delete on receipt, unopened if fwd is in the subject line....
End result ; now they clean them up and still send. No message, no how are you? etc.
I'm telling the world DON'T SEND THAT STUFF TO ME !, I have already seen it ten times.

:rant:Folks that just don't understand cell phone etiquette ... Especially loud cell phone talkers, this one really gets me.

1. If you're in a meeting, gathering, or anywhere where there's a person speaking - please either silence your phone or at least learn where your "quiet" button is when it does ring. And PLEASE don't answer it unless you've left the area.

2. Please don't belittle waitstaff, a cashier, or customer service person by being on the phone and expecting them to wait on you and understand your sign language or exaggerated mouthing of your words. It's just plain rude. If you can't end the call, then excuse yourself from the call for a minute to complete your exchange -- and go back to the call. (And for those of you taking orders and relaying them to the waitstaff/cashier -- can you settle all of that BEFORE it's your turn? Really, write it down or have them text their order to you)

3. And who are these women that can't ever find their phone when it rings? We're subjected to listening to "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" or the William Tell Overture while you're digging all thru your purse for the phone you just put back in there. Please folks, cell phone pockets are now in most every purse, backpack, and diaper bag.

I could go on, but that's probably my top three.

And to the loud cell phone talkers, I really don't care if that 1/2 million deal is "off the table if ..." or if you told off your boyfriend or better yet, your ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend ... Most of us are immune to cell phone conversation, you're supposed to just be background noise. It doesn't make you more popular than me because you're on the phone and I'm not -- so no need to "share" your conversation with me. Really, I don't feel left out.

How about being in a meeting and 2 folks in the back talking between themselves and having their own meeting in the middle of the meeting? This just seems rude to the person speaking at the time. Phones, pagers, etc. should be turned off or set to vibrate during a meeting. You can leave the area if the call is that important !

Someone already commented on the fact of calling a business and a person who barely speaks english answering the phone to assist you, I had this happen recently with two different companies and asked where they were from and one replied "Bahrain" and the other, "Mumbai, India." What is this all about? I call an American owned company and this is what happened. Guess what, I cancelled my services with both of them! I'm serious, I will not have someone like this benefit off of me.

Another pet peeve, when I am driving and the person behind me passes me just to make the next turn before me! People littering also aggravates me, this includes someone throwing their cigarette out the window and it hits my car.

One more thing, what about people who just let their kids holler and scream while in the store, restaurant, or doctor's office? Sorry, this bothers me also.

Believe it or not, I am actually a nice person...

JCSO, I agree, especially the kids. I moved 3 times at a football game because the kids behind me were kicking the back of my seat , running and stomping, got me in the back a couple of times. One father was so loud and obnoxious yelling at his boy and the defense on the field and the mother talked loudly, non-stop to her friends and on her cell phone. What is up with that?

The first is going 30 mph in a 50 mph zone on 281, people do not either see the speed sign or just ignore it.
The second is going 40 in a 60 on 1431 in the left lane and they would not yield if their life depended on it.
The third is the automated phone calls at 6:00pm with no live person, just a message about warrantys or they want you to vote for someone.
Your guys are right, I feel much better;)

- People who lie. Or, who promise to do something and never follow through, still a lie.:nono:
- I agree with the children above. I hate it when I go out to dinner on a date with my husband without the kids to have obnoxious children who are allowed to leave their table and roam around my table. If I had wanted to be with kids, I would've brought my own.:banghead: Oh, or when they kick your chair at the movie theatre.
- Loud, obnoxious, pushy people trying to boss you around or making fun of you for no reason other than to make themselves look big.

That was very true not to many years ago. There were two signal lights in town, one blinked yellow all the time and one stop light at 281 & 1431. Many drag races from that light heading north. How time has changed this great little town.:)

This was a popular thread and gave folks an opportunity to vent their frustrations, hopefully before it turned to serious anger.
We are an angry nation and rightfully so for the most part but as we all know anger is debilitating.

So here is another of my pet peeves , I need to get off my chest before I allow an accident to happen and then sue somebody.

Dedicated turn lanes are not travelling lanes ! How many times have you tried to move to the turn lane correctly only to find someone coming from a half block or more so fast you almost get hit, cut you off from moving into the lane and then nearly get hit from behind.

Will some of you good officers please explain the law in that regard? Reapp, you started this thread sometime ago. Thanks!

Reapp

This is the best explanation that I have seen, it is from http://www.texashighwayman.com/laws.shtml#CtrTurnLanes

Center turn lanes

§545.060 - DRIVING ON ROADWAY LANED FOR TRAFFIC
[...]

(b) If a roadway is divided into three lanes and provides for two-way movement of traffic, an operator on the roadway may not drive in the center lane except:
(1) if passing another vehicle and the center lane is clear of traffic within a safe distance;
(2) in preparing to make a left turn; or
(3) where the center lane is designated by an official traffic-control device for movement in the direction in which the operator is moving.

[...]
Center turn lanes are for use only when preparing to turn left from the main road onto a side street or driveway only. Only enter the lane just before you are ready to slow down for the turn. Also, the Federal Highway Administration's "Read Your Road" guide (link at the bottom of this page) indicates that, when turning from a side street or driveway onto the main road, you may also use this lane as a temporary refuge to wait for traffic to clear as long as you pull into the lane and wait and don't use the center turn lane as an acceleration lane. However, it is important to note that Texas law does not seem to specifically permit this action, and I have had reports that some folks have been cited for doing this and the court has upheld their citation, so I would recommend avoiding this maneuver unless you absolutely have to. Finally, although section (b)(1) above says you can use the center lane for passing, keep in mind that center lanes marked as left turn lanes cannot be used for passing as the traffic signs and pavement markings indicating that the lane is for left turns only take precedence.

I hate when the food product has big letters saying "NO MSG", but then you check the label and find that they have doubled the amount of sodium (salt) from what the original product had. And vice versa, they will say "lower/less/no salt" but then the back of the label says MSG added. The consumer HAS to read the fine print. Hill Country Fare (HEB) is bad about that.

When asked why HEB was discontinuing brand products and putting in their own labels, the manager replied, "We have to cater to the clientele". They feel the cheaper prices on their label bring in more customers. That's a laugh--exactly what "clientele" do they think they are catering to? Five cents isn't going to make that much difference to most people around here. And, agree, the non-brand products usually are not as good.

I also hate when people drive back and forth from Marble to Burnet, in the left lane, 5 mph under the limit, and half a dozen cars backed up behind them. That's why I go to Walmart. The HEB in Bee Cave and the HEB+ in Leander are not like that. If you're heading that way, anyway, it is well worth the stop on your way back. If everyone goes there, who will HEB cater to, then?

We live in Burnet, but go to the HEB+ in Leander, usually every other weekend. It is great. It makes the HEB in Burnet look like a second rate convenience store. We use it for emergencies only. The selection and quality at the + are 100% better. Better prices, too. A case of beer, yesterday, at the +, was $3 cheaper than in Burnet. Anyone hear anything else about the rumored new HEB location west of town? I've still got my fingers crossed on that one... I commute from Austin everyday and will stop at the Bee Caves location if it is not a peak time when I am coming through. That store can get really crowded too.

You should always keep to the right half of the road EXCEPT:

Here's one that irritates me:

You're behind a slow driver or slow moving lane and you put on your blinker to get in the other lane whereby a whole string of people right behind you see this and immediately move into the other lane and you can't move over!

Doesn't really apply to a multi-lane highway. It does need to be posted to be enforced.
