What a strange year. This fall was to be the "on" year for several of my best producing trees. Now, first the hail devestated the early new growth. I didn't think there would be many because the first couple of feet of branches are bare of leaves. Then we hve an extremely hot, dry summer, and not only are there no pecans, I am experiencing an early fall. On a seperate note, I guess that one Red Oak has fallen victim to the hail. It had early buds but has shown nothing after the hail stripped it of all leaves. So is it dead and need to be removed, or will it come back?

Chip, I have seen trees come back from some terrific damage. I suggest you wait at least one season, unless it is a terrible eyesore for you. I love pecan trees.

We have a Red Oak forest at the ranch in Goldthwaite and some native pecans, not hybrids, and they take a beating often. Year after year they come back. Always water at the drip line never the trunk.

The tree I wonder about is in my parking lot. It doesn't look healthy, yet I don't want to take it down if it is still alive. How do you check for a pulse ?

I've got some dead-looking bare oak trees on my property and I was wondering if they had oak wilt or if they were dead because of the drought. Some oaks have leaves and some don't. I'm afraid it will cost an arm and a leg to get a tree doctor out, so I guess I'll hope for the best.

Try calling your county extension office and ask to speak to someone who specializes in growing your type of tree. They are very helpful. I have called the Burnet county office several times with questions and they are always considerate and find the answers I need.
I've called about an oak tree,my plum tree and also about a pear tree I bought at the nursery.
I highly recommend them.

Very rough year for all vegetation and herbivores...best success this year with superthrive and once a week water drip overnight. With this early fall (cross your fingers) and rain some of those affected may come back to a limited extent next year. But don't remove any tree now unless a safety concern, give it at least till next May.:p

Where can we take our pecans to get shelled now that Texas Pecans no longer cracks/shells them?
